I stepped into the sunshine today and without realizing it paused and turned my face to meet its rays. The feeling was glorious. I have missed the sunlight lately, there have been lots of clouds and I have been inside far too much. I have decided to remedy this, for sunshine is a balm on my soul.
As I ponder the power of the sun to turn a rather plain day into a happy day it strikes me the sun that is shining on us today has greeted civilizations since the world began! And they say if walls could talk……
I like the quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson “ The sun shines and warms and lights us and we have no curiosity to know why this is so ; but we ask the reason of all evil, of pain and hunger, and mosquitoes and silly people.”
Today most people spend large portions of their days in light that is far different from the natural source. We learned from our biology lessons that plants and animals do not thrive without natural light. The human body requires sunlight for wellness. I am more than a little concerned about the sun’s bad reputation.
Sunlight enters our eyes and it goes to the pineal gland, which in turn regulates the entire endocrine glandular system. The pineal gland is shaped like a tiny pine cone, hence the name. It produces melatonin. It controls among other things your circadian rhythms (day/night cycles). How can it be beneficial to our well being to have our eyes constantly covered with glasses whether sun glasses or eye glasses? If this wee gland that needs sunlight to function properly isn’t getting enough natural light, how can that be affecting our health?
I honestly feel we need to look closely at the whole picture and not just fragments of what interest groups want us to hear. Do we slather ourselves with sunscreen put on our dark glasses and wonder aimlessly through life until it is discover a decade down the road oops, we didn’t have that one quite right. We need to become aware of what we need for good health; our intuition is a great place to start. But more on that later time to catch some rays. Be happy be healthy.
